The University of Idaho Vandals Comeback late, but lose to Oregon 10-12 in the first annual Mom’s Weekend game in the Kibbie Dome:
The Vandals had there first game in the Kibbie Dome in 5 years, the atmosphere was amazing and there was an attendance of 1,500 Vandal Fans. The Ducks came out fast and scored the first five goals of the game through the first and second quarter. The Vandals had a lot of chances, but could not finish early. Late in the second quarter the Vandals finally capitalized with a huge goal scored by Patrick Tunison (Junior) and assisted by Blake Batman (Sophmore). When this goal was scored the Kibbie Dome erupted, and the players went into halftime on a high.
The Vandals went into halftime down 6-1, but the Vandals came out firing in the 2nd half and scored 2 quick goals both by Andrew Spangler (Freshman) to cut the lead to three goals. The Ducks and Vandals exchanged goals throughout the rest of the 3rd quarter. Both Vandals goals where scored by Colton Raichl (Junior), the Vandals went into the 4th quarter down 11-5.
The Vandals headed into the 4th quarter with a lot of energy, but Oregon scored the first goal of the quarter and the Vandals where down 12-5. The Vandals then decided enough was a enough and decided to make a comeback. The first goal came on the man up by Colton Raichl (Junior), then the Vandals got a quick goal from Patrick Tunison (Junior) assisted by Blake Batman (Sophomore). Colton Raichl (Junior) scored again off a great feed from Andrew Spangler (Freshman). The Vandals where now down 12-8 with only a few minutes left in the game. Jack Williams (Freshman) then scored his first goal of the season with about 4:00 minutes remaining to bring the Vandals within 3 goals. With 2:00 minutes left in the game the Vandals got a beautiful goal from Colton Raichl (Junior) off an even better feed from Blake Batman (Sophomore). On the pursuing faceoff the Vandals got their 3rd faceoff violation of the half and went man down. The Vandals fought hard to try and put in 2 more goals, but where unsuccessful. The Vandals played a great game and finished with a hard fought 2 goals loss to a very good Oregon Ducks team 12-10.
Craig Patrick (Junior) lead the team in goal with 15 saves and played an awesome game between the pipes. The Vandals defense where able to shut Oregon down at the right points and played a great game as well. The defense was lead by Ryan Erstad (Senior) who had Six ground balls and a couple of huge hits. Colton Raichl (Junior) Ended up with 5 goals, Andrew Spangler (Freshman) had 2 goals and 2 assists, Patrick Tunison (Junior) had 2 goals and 1 assist, Blake Batman (Sophmore) had 3 assists and Deric Wilson (Junior) had 2 assists. The coaching staff was very pleased with the Vandals play on both sides of the ball and even though they did not get the win the Vandals played there best game against Oregon in years. The game was sponsored by Support Our Troops and where able to raise money for there charity. The Vandals are now 5-4 on the season and are fighting for a playoff spot. The Vandals have two big home games this weekend against Utah State on Friday at 6:00pm and a big conference game against Montana on Sunday at 12:00pm
